The Neighborhood of Bayside
Bayside, Queens, was once the home of the Matinecock Indians. This unique community was founded in the 17th Century. Fort Trotten Park, one of the historic areas, was named for the modernized Civil War fortress in which it resides. Enjoy the historic Cornell-Appleton house – the second oldest home in Queens. See the community website for more information. The Bayside Historical Society offers numerous exhibits, perfect for the whole family.
Today, Bayside offers a wide variety of shopping – from stores like Hazel Shoes on Bell Boulevard to the shops of Northern Boulevard and Francis Lewis Boulevard and the modern chain stores found in the Bay Terrace Mall. Locals refer to the shopping district as a “small village” because of the local businesses that Bayside offers.
Bayside also has hundreds of acres of parks, with ball fields, golf courses, picnic areas and hiking paths. This includes the Little Neck running path and mark, Alley Pond Park and Environmental Center, Cunningham Park and Fort Trotten. And below the Throgs Neck Bridge there's a convenient connection to The Utopia Parkway bicycle lane.
